Diners To Be Romanced Throughout February And Not Just On The 14th!

Culinary influences from around the world are infusing the February Chef's Specials at the Ship of Elswick, as it draws inspiration from the love theme that runs through the month to romance its diners, as well as offering its own inimitable spin on the traditional pancake celebrations that accompany Shrove Tuesday.

Lovers and food lovers alike will find something to pamper their palate, whether they want to choose a starter as a lighter meal, or go right to the other end of the scale and have a celebratory Fillet Rossini - a 7 oz fillet served en croute with chicken liver paté and accompanied by hand cut chunky chips and grilled tomatoes.

All you need is food love to enjoy the selection created by head chef, Allan Croft, who has created a feast of taste sensations for Valentine's couples, and those just wishing to enjoy a great meal out, alike.

Starters specials are an exotic Japanese Vegetable Pancakes dish, a suave Smoked Salmon Roulade, a Mediterranean-inspired Grilled Sardines on Toast and Baked Aubergine Parmigiana, lovingly layered with lashings of parmesan and tomato sauce.

Meat lovers can dive into three Chef's Specials main dishes: a Citrus and Ginger Chicken Breast served with white and wild rice and wilted spinach, an Italian Beef Stew, with mash potato, olives, tomatoes, sugar snaps and chantenay carrots and a Chicken, Prawn and Chorizo Rice Pot served with mixed peppers and peas and a wedge of rustic bread.

The vegetarian choice is a delicious and filling Wild Mushroom and Thyme Risotto, served with dressed rocket, with its distinct peppery taste.

All of these dishes will be on the Chef's Specials throughout February and available in addition to the large selection of starters, mains and lighter bites on The Ship at Elswick's a la carte menu.

The Ship at Elswick's general manager, John Bentley, believes this February fiesta of food is one of the most exciting ever created within any one month. He says: "An eclectic mix of foods, flavours and fabulous ingredients make this selection one that will delight anyone, regardless of their culinary preferences. Our chefs are looking forward to communicating their talent and flair and giving diners something completely different to brighten up duller February days, or add that vital ingredient to a romantic dinner for two".

The Ship Plans To Take The Romance With Retro To The Next Level

Diners on the Fylde Coast and around Preston are definitely not bucking the national trend according to leading dining pub, The Ship at Elswick, which says the desire for retro food is very much driving sales through its till and making it consider a special Retro Food Reconnoitre.

The Ship at Elswick's big sellers for 2011 were its sweet-cured gammon steak, served with the traditional egg or pineapple, chips, peas and grilled vine tomatoes, its fabulous fish and chips served with mushy peas and chips and its Lancashire hot pot with braised red cabbage and a wedge of rustic bread.

These dishes from yesteryear were selling ahead of modern main dishes such as garlic chicken - a seasoned, crisp, garlic and chilli-seasoned chicken served with salt crusted new potatoes and homemade aioli - and its gourmet burger, topped with bacon, mozzarella and relish and served with salad and chips.

This craving for retro food has been in evidence across the country as the recession has deepened, with chocolate bars like Wispa making a return, quiche becoming the dish of the moment once again and even omelettes and egg mayonnaise reappearing on on-trend menus. Sales of Bird's custard have soared, arctic roll is back in the supermarkets and M&S brought back the jam sandwich.

And, it's not just food. Local home interiors and gift retailer, The Atrium in Garstang, with which The Ship at Elswick has an on-going promotion through which a till generated form dropped into The Atrium could win a diner a £50 voucher to spend there, has also seen the trend in evidence in the items that people are buying for their homes.

The drive back to foods surrounded by nostalgia and childhood memories of 'better times' is making the Ship at Elswick think about extending its retro selection. If diners want to put forward suggestions, it is ready to stage a retro food fortnight in February, using its Chef's Specials to bring back taste bud ticklers from the 70s and 80s and maybe even earlier.

The Ship at Elswick's general manager, John Bentley, says: "We cannot ignore the trends we are seeing every week and it is apparent that diners are gaining comfort from their food more than ever before, particularly that which is from the past.

"We would love to give local food lovers a celebration of retro food, as a true winter treat, but we want to put the right dishes on the menu, so would welcome suggestions. Anyone sending in an idea of a dish they would like to see as a Chef's Special during a retro food celebration will be entered into a prize draw to win a two-course meal for two at The Ship at Elswick".

Suggestions for a retro dish that you would like to see on the menu can be emailed to mail@theshipatelswick.co.uk up to February 1. A selection of dishes may then be put on to a retro food fortnight menu - a real blast from the past and a echo of a lost era.

Ship Warms Up Diners With Curried Delights And Added Retail Extra

You can curry favour with your food-loving family and friends and simultaneously grab the chance to enter a competition that could help with your Christmas shopping, by heading to the Ship at Elswick this November.

To the end of the month, The Ship has warming and tasty curry Chef's Specials to spice up the long, dark winter nights and bring some Eastern flavour to dining out.

You could start your meal with a delicious prawn piri piri with folden naan bread and salad garnish, or a lamb kofta with cucumber salad and minted yoghurt dressing. For mains, a national favourite - chicken tikka masala - is sure to delight, whilst a lamb balti will be an equally hot choice for meat eaters. A vegetarian curry choice is also available, in the shape of a sizzling vegetable masala.

As always, these specials will support a full a la carte choice, plus lighter bites and other chef's specials. What is new at The Ship at Elswick, on the other hand, is the chance for diners to win a £50 retail prize through a competition organised by the eatery in conjunction with the newly-opened interiors and gift retailer, The Atrium, based in Garstang.

Diners at The Ship can write their details on the back of a special receipt generated when they pay for their meal and drop this into an entry box at The Atrium on Garstang's High Street (closed Wednesdays and Sundays). This will enable them to enter a prize draw in which they could win a £50 voucher to spend at the inspiring and high quality retail outlet. The competition operates on a continuous basis, with one draw every 6-8 weeks, so there is always a chance of winning.

The voucher can be spent on anything from home furnishings to quality giftware, giving Ship at Elswick diners an exclusive bonus when they dine out and take advantage of the chance to win.

Ship at Elswick manager, John Bentley, says: "We are spicing up November dining out in a big way and offering an added incentive to eat at The Ship. Someone could be ticking gifts off their Christmas list thanks to their Atrium voucher, so we want diners to come and enjoy their dining experience, get their entry receipt and remember that old adage that you've to be in it to win it".

Eatery Provides Sausage Aficionados With Belting Banger Choices

Leading Lancashire dining pub, The Ship at Elswick, has launched a November Chef's Choice menu peppered with bangers for Bonfire Night and sizzling with sausage specials to celebrate British Sausage Week (October 31-November 6).

Cracking starters on the sausage theme to be served throughout November are a pan seared game sausage served with carrot puree and red wine and thyme jus and, for Spanish food lovers, a pan seared chorizo sausage with crisp bacon lardoons and balsamic-glazed cherry tomatoes on rustic crouté.

The mains menu boasts an irresistible sausage and onions trio, featuring an Italian pork olive and herbs sausage, a Bury black pudding sausage and a Californian sausage flavoured with pork, mustard, peppers and herbs. This delicious dish is served with mash, red wine and onion jus and shallot onion rings.

This belter will compete for diners' affections with a Toulouse sausage dish, comprising a garlic, herb and gruyere glazed sausage served with cherry vine tomatoes, herb sauce and pommes neuf, for that additional French touch.

These tasty seasonal specials will be just some of the Chef's Choices for November and will also sit alongside the already extensive a la carte and snacks menus served at the eatery.

General Manager, John Bentley, says: "The clocks have gone back, Bonfire Night is on the horizon and we are all looking to gain comfort from our food choices. We are sure our sizzling sausage delights will fit the bill perfectly and that sales will rocket once word gets around about the innovative selection that we are laying on for sausage aficionados".

The Ship at Elswick only takes table reservations for groups of more than six, so if you wish to sample some sensational sausages, you can just turn up and tuck in. More information about the dining pub call 01995 672777.

The Ship's Hungry For The Captain To Stay

Charlie Adam at The Ship

Staff at the most talked-about dining pub in Lancashire, The Ship at Elswick, are joining the thousands of Blackpool FC fans who want inspirational captain, Charlie Adam, to resist the lure of Liverpool FC and stay at the club until the end of the season.

Charlie has become a regular face at the popular eatery and even took time to pose for a photograph with General Manager, John Bentley, and some of his crew, during a recent visit.

Fittingly, the ace mid-fielder even booked the 14-seater Captain's Table, positioned in a more private part of the dining pub, though he did remove the armband for the evening whilst celebrating his girlfriend's 21st birthday!

John Bentley, says: "Charlie has dined with us a few times now and enjoys our relaxed atmosphere and high quality food. We would love him to stick around to help keep Blackpool FC in the Premiership, but if he does decide to move on, wish him well with his future career and hope that he will return to see us some time".

Fans wishing to have their own celebration in the Captain's Table area can book on 01995 672777, but otherwise bookings are only required for tables of six or more. Customers may eat either from the extensive a la carte menu, which includes bar snacks and light bites, or from an ever-changing selection of Chef's Specials.

Jodie Gives Ship's Food Glorious Food A Rave Review

Jody Prenger Pulls a Pint

It was a case of food, glorious food for West End star and former Nancy, Jodie Prenger, when she spent her Valentines evening at The Ship at Elswick, with boyfriend, Simon.

Jodie, who won voters' hearts in BBC TV's "I'd Do Anything" programme, to seize a role in the musical Oliver created by Andrew Lloyd-Webber, has recently discovered that it's a fine life at The Ship and the couple regard it as their favourite place to dine on the Fylde Coast.

The eatery does not create over-priced menus for special occasions such as Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Father's Day, instead allowing diners to choose from the extensive a la carte menu, or exquisite chef's specials, which suited Jodie and Simon down to the ground.

Jodie selected Mushroom Stilton Melt as her starter, followed by a healthy Salmon Nicoise, whilst Simon opted for a hearty Bury Black Pudding dish and Chicken & Bacon Posh Pie, with chunky chips and garden peas, as his choices. Both then grabbed a spoon to dive in to one of The Ship's infamous and much-loved, massive Sharing Sundaes.

The Ship's crew were delighted to treat Jodie and Simon to some bubbly, to keep the Valentine's night on song.

Jodie and Simon are now eyeing up the forthcoming events at The Ship, including Mother's Day and Father's Day. Thanks to this policy of serving the normal menu, both events are hugely popular, so booking is essential on 01995 672777.

The Ship at Elswick's General Manager, John Bentley, says: "We were delighted to have Jodie here on Valentine's night and know that she enjoyed the food and relaxed atmosphere. We definitely consider her our mate and what else can we say, given her role in Oliver, but 'you can go, but be back soon'.
